Torah in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs seems an unlikely spot for a Torah community, but there is much going on here. Check this page for more news.

Kosher Resources

Somebody in Colorado Springs is keeping kosher because basic supplies are relatively accessible (if you don't mind hopping from store to store):

Meat: For a wide selection of kosher beef, lamb, and bison, you have to visit the Kosher Deli on Elm in Denver.  King Sooper's on Uintah is doing the best job of catering to kosher shoppers. They carry Empire-brand poultry, some Meal Mart beef products, and some other packaged meat products. Other King Sooper's may have kosher meat products, but we haven't checked recently.  Safeway occasionally carries Empire-brand turkeys, usually around civic holidays. Also, many supermarkets carry Hebrew National processed meats, which now carry Triangle-K kosher (non-glatt, however) certification.  Nathan's now has certified kosher hot dogs, which we like better than Hebrew National and which we've seen at Safeway stores. (But make sure you get the kosher version.) Some supermarkets have cans of chicken broth in their kosher sections.

Cheeses: Kosher soft cheeses are readily available in supermarkets. King Sooper's on Uintah has begun carrying a selection of kosher aged cheeses in their dairy section, which is good news.  Currently, this section is on the south end of the stair, but it is not labeled "kosher." Occasionally, we find a kosher brie or another kosher gourmet cheese in with non-kosher cheeses.

Bread: King Sooper's store brand of bread, hamburger buns, and hot dog buns are often kosher. Baker's Inn breads, available at King Sooper's and some other outlets, are both wholesome and kosher.

Wine: Cheers liquor store on Circle Drive has a labeled "kosher wine" section that includes some Israeli wines and Baron Von Herzog wines as well as the sweet varieties from Kedem, Mogen David, and Manischewitz. The last two brands are available in most liquor stores. We've seen a selection of Baron Von Herzog wines at the liquor store in the Southgate Mall, next to Par Avion. The liquor store on Colorado and 31st has been carrying a Rashi sweet red. Kedem and other kosher grape juices can usually be found in regular supermarkets in the kosher food sections.

Other Stuff: King Sooper's on Uintah seems to be working at shelving kosher products. It seems like every time we go in there we find another section of kosher foods that, oddly, are not always labeled as such. Recently, we found a frozen food section devoted to kosher items (meat and dairy) and a shelf of crackers from mainly kosher companies. Neither section was labeled "kosher." If you're new to shopping kosher, you might not know that many canned and packaged food items are kosher and available in any supermarket. You just need to look for the kosher seal.

Sabbath Candles: You can find these in the kosher foods section of most supermarkets.
