The Five RelationshipsTo relate to the Jewish community in a positive manner, it is helpful to think about the context in which your relationship occurs. Are you working with a Jew? Are you learning from a rabbi? Are you donating money or time to the Jewish community? Are you wanting to attend a synagogue? Are you friends with a Jewish person? Each of these questions represents a different type of relationship that you can have with the Jewish community. I count five:
Of course Jews work with each other, study with each other, give to Jewish causes, worship together, and socialize. But their relationships with each other are not the same as what you can have – or should have – with them. Nevertheless, if you understand the different ways you can relate to the Jewish community, it will be easier for you to develop relationships that support instead of endanger the Jewish community and that enrich your life as well. — KENNETH GUENTERT
