It all started by a
mountain lake when the author saw a dog. Not just any dog. A big dog. A really
big dog. She didn't know what kind of dog it was. She just knew she would have
one some day. And so she did. The dog, Hank, became a member of the family and
much more. A welcome presence in restaurants. A visitor to Alzheimer patients. A
reading companion for elementary school children. Emotional support and mutual
caretaker for special-needs teens. This is the story of how one king-sized
animal touched dozens of human lives.

"Snowyridge
Commander Hank is the dog god.
He helped me when my cat died.
He can sense feelings of people.
He is a real stinker to teach.
He is always there for people."
--Colt Troutman, age 13
"I enjoyed being around Hank. He, being a trained therapy dog, always seemed to
know when someone was upset. I heard somewhere that dogs and cats can smell your
emotions, and can be trained to recognize them. I am bipolar, and so was
frequently in need of Hank's emotional support during mood swings. He would come
over to me whenever I had an issue as if to say, 'Take me for a walk. It'll calm
your nerves.' And so it did."
--Zach Pyburn, age 15
"Hank
will not usually make you mad unless he drools on your favorite thing. When Hank
is around, I feel like he would risk his life for me."
--Arron Evers, age 14
Jeanne
Schoech has worked with children for
forty years, as a dance teacher and in public education. Snowyridge Commander (aka
Hank) introduced her to obedience training and therapy work in both
nursing homes and schools.
