the powerful journal of a young martial arts student. It chronicles an extended meditation exercise
her sensei (guide) gave her as a tool for resolving internal conflicts and healing old scars that were affecting her martial arts practice.
Everyone has internal voices—the classic “devil” and “angel” that sit on
one's shoulder. Everyone carries remnants of influential people in his or her
life. Some are advisors, some are tormentors, teachers, parents, friends. This exercise
was designed to allow each of those voices to take full form in the author's meditation and
to enable her to interact with them directly. Using this method, she was able to
bring harmony to her assembly of inner voices and thereby to resolve many of her
old conflicts.
